Microgaming is easily one of the most important casino software developers on the face of the planet. From its Isle of Man HQ, Microgaming is credited as having developed the very first online casino. When it comes to online casinos, the success of Microgaming is beyond reproach. But for all of the casino success, Microgaming has not quite hit the same highs in its forays into the bingo and poker markets. However, that could be set to change for the online poker market.
An Advanced Poker Interface
A press release not too long ago boldly claimed that “Babelfish is definitely a game changer for poker,” according Microgaming head of poker Alex Scott. The reason for the confidence is that Babelfish is an advanced poker interface (API) that will give Microgaming’s poker clients the power to develop a bespoke poker client and connect it to the Microgaming Poker Network (MPN), through which players can access tournaments.
Alex Scott also took the time to explain that the Babelfish API will enable MPN operators “to customise their poker software to a higher degree” and “without having to go standalone.” Essentially, Microgaming is trying to make customisation an affordable option for its clients. In such a hotly contested industry, many sites cannot afford to risk developing an entirely unique platform for fear of failure.
Now, though, they can have the benefit of customisation while coming in on budget. Babelfish also removes the complexity that poker operators might fear. Notably, hosting costs and random number generators were cited as possible concerns for Microgaming clients.
Sweeping Device Compatibility
Microgaming’s sweeping press release took the time to herald yet more benefits of Babelfish. Crucially, the platform will give poker operators the power to develop software capable of functioning on a range of devices, from smartphones and tablets to smart TVs and games consoles. Increasing the availability of a service logically expands its reach for players.
Innovation is a pivotal battleground throughout the online gambling industry, and it’s not exception for the poker market. Incredibly, the functionality of Babelfish goes beyond catering to the devices listed above, extending to encompass bizarre possibilities such as fridges and in-car entertainment systems. More sensibly, though, Babelfish can ensure compatibility for smartwatches.
Who’s the First Babelfish Operator?
For the few innovations that succeed in the online gambling, there are many more failures that you’ve never even heard about. Well, the key to successfully launching new innovations is by securing deals with prominent gambling operators, and the poker market is no exception.
Already it would appear that Microgaming is set to make a splash with Babelfish. The press release explained that a “well-known major operator in the poker marketplace” will launch an online poker site developed from the ground up using Babelfish.
Although Microgaming has not yet mentioned the name of the operator, there is confidence that the operator will have the star power to expand the Babelfish platform. Microgaming’s ultimate goal is to finish the year “at the pinnacle of the poker industry.” Monitoring the progress of Babelfish will certainly be interesting.
